Milk Day

Rev. Rick Millsap of Trinity Episcopal Church addressed a crowd of people marking Harvey Milk Day in downtown Reno on May 22, Milk’s birthday. The San Francisco civil rights leader was believed to be the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. He was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. On Nov. 27, 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated. Milk received the Medal of Freedom posthumously in 2009.
