Marilyn Monroe comes back in denim

That Mastercard television commercial about blue jeans being “priceless” has a Nevada connection.

The spot, produced by McCann Erickson Advertising, uses footage of various dungareed celebrities, making its point most convincingly with a clip of a denim-clad Marilyn Monroe. The clip is taken from The Misfits, the star’s last completed film, which was shot at various locations in Washoe and Lyon counties.

The narrative of the commercial questions whether the celebrities—who also include Marlon Brando, John Wayne, the Ramones and Carlos Santana—could look better in pleated slacks, khaki shorts or Capri pants. As it happens, Capri pants—not jeans—were Monroe’s favorite apparel, and she wore them far more than denim.
