Made for mayhem

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Performing Arts Series continues with the neo-traditional stylings of Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem. The group describes itself as “a young, hip, crackerjack string band in love with American music.” And it shows in their quirky mix of styles ranging from Appalachian gospel to zydeco, with some pop and jazz elements for good measure. Vocalist and fiddler Rani Arbo formed the band in 2000 after leaving the well regarded roots band, Salamander Crossing. Arbo’s long, diverse list of musical accomplishments includes performing in church choirs, early-music ensembles and a honkytonk band. Daisy mayhem includes baritone and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Kinsey, guitarist Anand Nayak and percussionist Scott Kessel, all of whom provide vocal accompaniment to Arbo’s alto voice.

Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem perform 7:30 p.m., Oct. 20, at Nightingale Concert Hall inside the Church Fine Arts Complex at the University of Nevada, Reno. Tickets are $5-$20. Call 784-4046.
