I’m All For You
A marvelous collection of ballads featuring Lovano on tenor, George Mraz on bass, Paul Motian on drums and octogenarian Hank Jones on piano. The group leisurely steams and dreams along with delicately understated interplay. Lovano manages to get a sweet tone from his horn that seems to be part of the very fabric of the songs—hushed and whispered as it needs to be; and the melody and improvisation are carefully balanced throughout. The nine cuts are all of a similar mood—from Lovano’s title piece and covers of Monk, Gillespie and Coltrane to “Like Someone in Love” and “Stella by Starlight”—a 3 o’clock in the morning, dimly lit kind of mood, coming straight from the corners of the heart.
