Housekeeping

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

So we’re launching these new mug shots in the paper this week. They were drawn by Michael Grimm, the multi-talented artist who draws the cartoon “The Last Days.” He’s been a vital part of this newspaper for just short of six years. Anyway, I wanted to add something that emphasized the opinion-writing personalities who work here at the paper, but I didn’t want to do just a regular old photographic mug shot. Do you like these images? Hate them? Their simplicity certainly tends toward blowing up for dartboard purposes.

Also new, we’ve got the in-house blogs started. Dennis and I have already begun writing. Dennis’ blog is called “Newsview,” and it includes his thoughts on some of the top stories of the day, and it also includes his Nevada Timeline, an almanac that he’s sent out to friends for years. My blog is called the “Sacred Cow Meatpacking Company,” and it started as a blog for us to train on, but I kind of like it. It’s going to be about the things I don’t write about in this here column. I don’t know what that will include exactly, but suffice to say, it’ll be fresh stuff. Kat Kerlin is also going to do a blog, and it won’t be too long before we open up the blogging to outside-these-four-walls bloggers. You may see some names you recognize in there. You’ll find links to our blogs on our opinion “module” at www.newsreview.com.

Finally, I wanted to mention again that we’ve begun taking votes in our Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada readers’ poll. I’m really hoping the community jumps on this one because if it works the way I think it might, it will actually give non-chain stores the chance to compete against the big guys and for people who never got to be the best (Best Bicycle Tuner) to get in on the action.
