Hawaiian punch

The music and dance of Hawaii comes to Reno this weekend in the form of the Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu dance group. The San Francisco-based company returns to the Biggest Little City to open the 10th annual Artown festival. The group blends traditional hula movements with non-Hawaiian music, a style they call “hula mua.” Their performance includes narration to explain what the different hula movements mean. Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu—which translates as “the many feathered wreaths at the summit, held in high esteem—will perform 7:30 p.m. July 1 at Wingfield Park, First Street and Arlington Avenue. The group will also present a pre-show dance workshop at 1 p.m. at the park. Both events are free. Call 322-1538 or visit www.renoisartown.com.
