Gulliver’s Travels

Rated 2.0

So as to not buck any trends, Hollywood uncorks yet another mediocre, big money 3-D extravaganza, this time with Jack Black pissing all over the legacy of Jonathan Swift’s classic Gulliver’s Travels. Black plays the title character, who winds up in the land of Lilliput with miniature people after his boat gets sucked into the Bermuda Triangle. For such a giant, expensive 3-D world, the movie’s look is rather flat and unimaginative. Jason Segel and Emily Blunt are woefully underused as Horatio and Princess Mary. Both are decent comic performers given next to nothing to do in the proceedings. Black’s shtick gets tired fast, made all the worse by a sudden musical number for the film’s finale that feels forced and tacked on. Black needs to stop taking roles fashioned for 20-year-olds and stick to more adult undertakings like Tropic Thunder.
