Green team

In what may be gimmick, genuine or both, the Maryland Nighthawks have changed their name to the Maryland Greenhawks in an attempt to show their commitment to the environment. It may just be my cynical side, but I can’t help thinking this was a savvy way for the minor league basketball team to attract a niche group of sponsors, which it has done with the CarbonFund.org, Honest Tea and Sweet Green on board. But the team has promised a bamboo court, hemp nets, recycling basketball shoes, and uniforms and basketballs made from recycled materials. On their new website, www.gogreenhawks.com, they claim to be the “first green professional sports team.” Now they just have to live up to it.
