Humans have been using flowers to send messages for millennia. When words fail us, we send a bouquet to express our love, congratulations, sympathies and best wishes. As Sparks Florist director Suzanne Bird says, florists are not in the flower business but in the “emotions business.”

Apparently, Sparks Florist is doing a great job at it since our readers have voted Sparks Florist as the area’s best florist for the past several years.

Bird credits that to good service and quality products. “We work to make sure our customers are satisfied 100 percent of the time,” she says.

Sparks Florist has been around since 1960. It was started by Tony Fianacca and Frank Foote, two young florists who wanted to operate a business of their own. The Sparks store has been at its current location since 1970. In 1988, Sparks Florist opened up a second shop in South Reno.

Foote has since retired from the business, but Fianacca and his son, Mike, continue to run the stores. Bird says the store offers fresh flowers, green plants, blooming plants, balloons, gourmet gift baskets and other items for any occasion. She says Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are the stores’ busiest times of the year. Although some flowers are more popular during particular seasons than others, she says roses are the most popular flower throughout the year.
