Best place to hunt for Reservoir Dogs

The Book Gallery
1203 N. Rock Blvd.
Sparks
356-8900

So you can’t find The Gods Must Be Crazy on VHS anywhere. Never released to the public on VHS, the guy behind the counter at the chain video store says the only copies floating around are from defunct video rental places. How bogus. You go into The Book Gallery, a “previously owned” media store, looking for a few films on your wish list. The store’s been around for more than a decade. Phil Davis bought it about six months ago. You always finds cool things to read when you’re low on bread. Like The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1970) or The Total Woman (1974). The store also buys and sells movies on VHS and DVD. There’s a wall of films in alphabetical order. VHS tapes are $5 each—but if you find five you like (not hard), Davis will sell the stack to you for $20. Though you don’t find Crazy Gods, you walk out with a stack that includes Pump Up the Volume, Natural Born Killers, Mall Rats and Reservoir Dogs. That’s one loud, disturbing movie night. Makes you happy.

Best place to put your green thumb

G & G Nursery & Landscaping
1425 Hymer Ave.
Sparks
331-4024

OK, everybody knows there are five or six really good plant nurseries in the Truckee Meadows where you can buy any kind of decorative botanical, from abelia to zizyphus. But how many places around really devote some space to the kinds of plants that aren’t only food for the eyes but, well, food? It may be fall now, but there are gardeners all over the valley sending out requests for seed catalogues, planning a new raised-bed garden (Hey, did you know railroad ties contain creosote, a known carcinogen?), and getting ready to put down the winter crop of garlic. G&G has the best selection of vegetable-type plants in town (in season), and if they don’t have the variety you desire, they’ll leave no stone unturned to find it for you.
