Go the spoils

Welcome to this week's Reno News & Review.

I'm writing the editor's note this week because Brian is on vacation—partly because, as I'm sure he's told you if you've seen him recently, or you follow him on social media, or if you regularly read this very column, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart recently flew him out to New York for an interview.

We just had a big weekend: Friday night, Sept. 19, was our annual party with the winners of our Best of Northern Nevada contest over at the club Edge in the Peppermill. It ended up getting a little wild—not too wild, but just wild enough.

Then, Saturday night was the awards ceremony for the Nevada Press Association awards. We won a bunch of stuff among the urban weeklies. First places: best spot news story, Dennis Myers; best nonstaff story, Georgia Fisher; best business feature, D. Brian Burghart; best local non-staff column, Brendan Trainor; best sports feature, Cody Johnson; best entertainment writing, Bob Grimm; best critical writing, Jessica Santina; freedom of the press, D. Brian Burghart; best page one design, Hayley Doshay and Brian Breneman; best large-apace ad, Melissa Arendt and Bev Savage; best special section or campaign (advertising), kids and staff of Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows and RN&R team; Silver Star Award, Greg Erwin; best online writing, D. Brian Burghart.

Second places: general excellence, RN&R staff; community service, D. Brian Burghart; best spot news story, Dennis Myers; best business news story, Dennis Myers; best local non-staff column, Sheila Leslie; best sports story, Brad Bynum; best editorial writing, Dennis Myers; best special section (editorial), RN&R staff; best large-space ad, Bev Savage and RN&R design team; best special section or campaign (advertising), Skyler Smith, John Murphy, Frank Haxton, RN&R team; and advertising general excellence, RN&R team.

Congrats to all the winners, and also once again to all the Best Of winners. Fun partying with y'all last week!
