Gas-guzzling home development approved

In a 4-2 vote, the Reno City Council gave its approval to the Winnemucca Ranch development, zoning it for 12,000 homes and 2 million square feet of commercial space.

The site is more than 25 miles north of Reno and would result in significant consumption of gasoline on the commute at a time when most municipalities are trying to avoid increasing their contributions to climate change. During the recent municipal elections, most candidates argued for developing “infill” rather than sprawling into outlying areas.

The project, now called Spring Mountain, must still be approved by the Regional Planning Commission.
