Forsythe to support Griffin

Former Washoe Republican Chairwoman Earlene Forsythe said Tuesday that she would not be running for Reno mayor. Instead, she’ll be backing Mayor Jeff Griffin in his re-election bid.

Forsythe was expected to announce her candidacy this week. She said she had considered running out of concerns for the train trench, the river walk, convention center and tax issues facing the citizens.

“The costs of these projects place an uneven tax burden on citizens and industries,” she said.

But a talk with Griffin changed her mind, she said, and assured her that these concerns would be addressed by the mayor.

“I will actively campaign to re-elect the mayor,” Forsythe said.

Forsythe did not indicate whether she was interested in running for another office. She is eligible to run for the Ward 2 Reno City Council seat held by Dave Rigdon or a Washoe County Commission seat held by Ted Short.

Meanwhile Sparks business owner Bob Cashell, a former lieutenant governor of Nevada, said he would announce next week whether he will throw his hat in the ring. Cashell briefly considered running against County Commissioner Jim Galloway two years ago. When asked about his residency, Cashell indicated he was moving into Reno. Cashell is renting a campaign headquarters on East Fourth Street.
