An out-of-state group says it has come to Nevada to “defend” Nevada’s initiative petition process.

Citizens in Charge, of Woodbridge, Va., has bought some radio air time to run its ads claiming that a state constitutional amendment (Assembly Joint Resolution 5) being considered at the Nevada Legislature “tips the balance in favor of Carson City politicians, lobbyists and special interests—further tightening their grip on the lawmaking process.”

It also charges that “the legislature is considering changes to the initiative law that will make the process much more difficult and expensive for you”

The advertisement asks listeners to “call your legislators and tell them to leave Nevada’s initiative petition process alone.”

No information is available on where the radio spots are running in Nevada.

SJR 5 would increase the number of signatures required to place initiatives or referenda on the ballot. Any change would have to be approved by voters.
