Clever competition

A smart HVAC controller invented by two local engineers at their Sparks-based company, Clausius, is on its way to the semifinals in the Cleantech Open. The competition claims to be the world’s largest for cleantech business.

Co-founders Denis Donovan and Mike Matheus have applied for a provisional patent for their technology, which can remotely control small business or residential HVAC systems. In the pilot stage now, the technology is expected to be able to have an energy savings of 20 to 35 percent over conventional controllers.

Competitors in the Cleantech Open receive mentoring, training, access to business clinics and exposure to investors. The final award of $250,000 will be given in November.
