City of Ember

Rated 2.0

An underground city powered by a big generator starts experiencing periodic blackouts, prompting a young messenger named Lina (Saoirse Ronan) and a plumber named Doon (Harry Treadaway) to find a way to escape and survive. Bill Murray is given nothing to do as the mayor of the city of Ember. He has a few scenes where he isn’t allowed to cut loose, and he seems uncomfortable in the role. He even looks bored when getting attacked by a giant mole. Tim Robbins is also underused as a factory worker and the father of Doon, who may or may not be interested in escaping the city. The gifted Ronan is asked to run around a lot, but given little to drive the story. Actually, there really isn’t much of a story. Just some impressive special effects surrounding dull proceedings, which is too bad considering the talent involved. The only good thing about the movie is that Murray has been talking about doing Ghostbusters 3 while on press junkets.
