By the whey

Two Kraft cheese plants in New York are converting waste into energy. Digesters are turning whey into biogas at the Lowville plant, which makes Philadelphia cream cheese, and at a string cheese plant in Campbell. The process is expected to save a third of the plants’ natural gas purchases, as well as the cost of hauling the waste away.

GreenBiz.com reports that other companies are also converting waste into energy: Some McDonald’s in the United Kingdom turned waste into electricity earlier this year, two Chrysler plants in St. Louis are turning paint solids into electricity, and Heinz is currently attempting to turn potato peels into energy.
