Bridesmaids

Rated 4.0

All hail Kristen Wiig, the new queen of comedy. Wiig co-writes and stars as Annie, who recently saw her bakery fail and is stuck in a piss poor relationship. She’s enlisted by her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) to be her maid of honor, and the timing couldn’t be worse. Annie basically does a terrible job with her duties and is constantly upstaged by a rich bitch (Rose Byrne) contending for Lillian’s friendship. The movie has a big heart to go with its big laughs, some of which are wonderfully raunchy. Wiig is so good here, especially during a drunken moment on an airplane, that she deserves some awards consideration at year’s end. Melissa McCarthy steals scenes as Megan, the tough-talking, puppy-stealing member of the bridal party. Annie’s relationship with a cop (Chris O’Dowd) who pulls her over for broken brake lights is remarkably sweet. The last screen appearance for the late, great Jill Clayburgh.
