Bodies in motion
In 1958, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater introduced the world to the rich and varied artistic expressions of African Americans. Today, the New York-based organization is one of the largest modern dance companies in the world. Its junior company, Ailey II, visits the area during Black History Month as part of its cross-country tour celebrating the main company’s 45th anniversary. The Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble was formed in 1974 to showcase young, up-and-coming dancers as they made the transition from the studio to the stage. Now known as Ailey II, the touring ensemble has won over critics and audiences alike with a program featuring innovative dance pieces by several choreographers and signature pieces such as Alvin Ailey’s “Revelations.” “The Ailey II company can be counted on to deliver high-energy dancing made even more electric by the push of youthful ambition,” says The New York Times. The performance begins 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Showroom inside the Cal Neva Resort, 2 Stateline Road, Crystal Bay. Tickets are $18 adults, $10 students and $25 for preferred seating. For details, call Arts for the Schools at (530) 546-4602, or call 832-4000 for tickets.—Kelley Lang
