Best of Northern Nevada

In the bloody battle for the title “Best of Northern Nevada,” the reader is the real champion

Es finito! The grand battle between the luchadores and luchadoras is complete. The champions are named. The masks have come off.

It was a bloody battle as the contenders threw each other around the ring like plastic action figures. The Little Nugget dropped In-N-Out with a sidewalk slam out of the break in the battle for the title of Best Burger. But In-N-Out wasn’t out of the running, and the California Marauder returned with a swinging neck block to super-corporation McDonald’s, taking the belt and the applause for Best French Fries.

“It’s great to be the best,” proclaimed triumphant locals’ favorite Peppermill Hotel Casino, holding the belt for Best Casino above its new garage like the victorious luchador brandishes the mask of his vanquished rival.

Viva! Viva! Mayor Bob Cashell, who took Sen. Harry Reid to the mat in the match-up for Best Politician! Viva to all the combatants, all the victors and all those found wanting! Viva! Viva! There is honor in the battle.

This year, our tournament of campeones had more opportunities for victory than ever before. With more than 200 categories and 837 individually qualified voters, these are winners you can take to the bank. But like in any contest of strength and valor, sometimes the black masks win. As your trusted referees, we can only turn our backs when the folding chairs come out and the unexpected conquistadores take home the championship belt. A chain store over the blood, sweat and tears of a local individual, business or artist? Si, lo sentimos, nuestros amigos, we can only report the heartrending results.

To the champions: Congratulations to all. Bueno! Bueno! To the readers who were kind enough to offer opinion after interminable opinion to help us in our quest for truth: Thank you, thank you very much. You went the distance. You are the real winners.

But there are others: We offered prizes to those who were kind enough to fill out our massive questionnaire. Our top three prizewinners have been notified, so check your e-mail. You’ve got a week to call us back.
