Best of Northern Nevada 2003

Welcome to the grooviest, most righteous, right on, far out readers’ poll in the Truckee Meadows and beyond

You did it readers.

Just as last year and the year before that and all those years prior to that, you went the distance. Yes, there are an ungodly number of categories, and some of you answered every single category. In many cases, you even patronize the places you voted for. Get ready, here are the results. These are the very best businesses, people, places and things of their kind in Northern Nevada, and since they are the best in Northern Nevada, you can bet they’d have a shot at being the best of the best anywhere.

This year, in the interest of objectivity, Boy Scout Troop 14 helped us count the ballots, working diligently until 9:30 p.m. on a school night. Our editors then moved in, removing ballots of businesses who haven’t offered us free services over the year, buoying up our friends, throwing on extra hash marks for all the chain businesses, taking note of who advertises and eliminating the 90-day past dues. (Just kidding.)

Were there surprises? You bet. That Best Buy is the best computer store came as a surprise to some of us who’ve bought or had computers serviced at local computer stores. How about Trader Joe’s being an independently owned store? Or what about Claim Jumper being the second-best restaurant in Reno? Really.

In the interest of overcoming some of the obvious inequities and because we editors are nothing if not egomaniacs, we once again sprang into the fray, offering up some of our own favorites in the interest of keeping things objectively light-hearted.

At any rate, we hope you enjoy the results. After all, you took the time to write us to tell us your opinion. Keep this issue around for those moments when you are trying to decide where to have dinner or what gay bar to take the boss to or even whom you might want to take to lunch.

Don’t forget, these are the best for one reason and one reason only: You said they are.

Rock on. Congratulations winners.
