Benefit show for car artist

Friends of Rockette Bob are organizing a benefit show for the car artist, who suffered a stroke in March.

Dapper Dan, an organizer of the event, said that the benefit was organized to help cover some of Rockette Bob’s medical expenses, which have exceeded $100,000.

Rockette Bob, who’s real name is Robert VanKeuren III, is well-known in the area for some of his bizarre car creations. He’s a regular visitor to the Burning Man Festival and The Orange Show’s annual Pennzoil Art Car Weekend in Houston, Tex.

“This guy is a legend. He’s the only guy in town who does [art cars],” Dan said.

Rockette Bob said he’s slowly recovering, although he has some vision problems in his left eye and weakness in the left side of his body. He said the stroke was caused by his not taking his high blood pressure medication. He stressed that those with high blood pressure pay attention to their health and take their medication regularly.

“I’m glad to be alive,” he said. “Every day is a gift.”

There will be live music, a raffle and a silent auction. The Atomiks, Surf Lords, Mad Scientists Club and Stars of David are some of the bands scheduled to perform. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The event will begin at 4 p.m. May 12 at the Interpretive Gardens, 7777 White Fir St. For details, call 747-2222.
