Bad Boys II

This film, Michael Bay’s sequel to his 1998 hit starring Martin Lawrence and Will Smith as unorthodox cops, has no business being any good. Somehow, with all of its incomprehensible action and over-the-top violence, it winds up being quite the guilty pleasure. This is due in large part to Lawrence and Smith, who make for a great screen pair. The movie acts as sort of a sick satire of Bay’s terrible directing style, a sort of slap in his own face. Taken on this level, the film can be enjoyed, even by Bay haters. Among the visual treats: car chases involving automobiles and dead bodies being thrown at Lawrence and Smith and a slow-mo tracking shot of a bullet that bursts through one of Lawrence’s butt cheeks. This ultra violent, hard R-rated movie isn’t for everyone, but fans of buddy cop movies might find plenty of reasons to enjoy it.
