Another Year

Rated 4.0

Mike Leigh’s latest is a showcase for actress Lesley Manville, who delivers heartbreaking work as Mary, a lonely woman who isn’t aging gracefully. She’s joined by Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen as a married couple who allow her to drop by their home whenever she wants. This leads to many awkward party moments. Leigh’s screenplay is typically great and the ensemble is terrific. It’s not his best work, but it’s proof he hasn’t lost his touch. Manville should’ve gotten an Oscar nomination for this one. Her absence from this year’s ceremonies is a major snub.
