All-star band

Dash your winter blues away with the summertime sounds of Smash Mouth. The San Jose, Calif., band often visits Lake Tahoe when they’re on tour, but this time the band makes the trip down Interstate 80 to Reno. The band first hit the alternative music charts with their ’60s-inspired beach-party hit, “Walking in the Sun,” which appeared on their 1997 album Fush Yu Mang. Their follow-up album, Astro Lounge, broke into the U.S. Top 10 charts, thanks to the success of their single, “All Star,” which was also featured on the Digimon and Mystery Men soundtracks. Although the band’s proceeding albums haven’t quite matched the heights of their earlier works, they found success in 2001 with their cover of The Monkees’ “I’m a Believer,” which they contributed to the Shrek soundtrack. Their latest album, Get the Picture, scored a minor hit with “You Are My Number One,” which was co-written by Neil Diamond (who also wrote The Monkees song). Smash Mouth performs 8 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Reno Hilton Theater, 2500 E. Second St. Tickets are $44. Call 789-2285 for details.—Kelley Lang
