Malik (Tahir Rahim) is sentenced to a six-year stint in a French prison, where he quickly finds himself going against his nature to survive. A crime lord (Niels Arestrup) singles him out for assignment, and the solitary Malik must work for his protection. Along the way he learns to read and write and how to rise up in the world of crime. Directed by Jacques Audiard, the film brings to mind The Godfather, and its similar story about the creation of criminal kingpin. Rahim’s performance is a stunner; his Malik is a character that will stick with you long after viewing. The film is a distinct work of art and it received a well-deserved Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination.
