A Prairie Home Companion

Director Robert Altman turns on the camera and lets an all-star cast go hog wild in this boring ode to Garrison Keillor’s long-running radio show. The cast includes Lily Tomlin, Meryl Streep, Lindsay Lohan, Woody Harrelson, Kevin Kline, John C. Reilly and Keillor himself. While they all seem to be enjoying themselves, the movie is a little too loose and sloppy to be enjoyable to the audience. Fans of the actual radio show will most assuredly get a kick out of it, but those who don’t care about Keillor’s work will be bored. Especially bad is a subplot involving an angel (a very bad Virginia Madsen) hanging around the radio show on the night of its final performance. Streep and Reilly have decent singing voices—that’s about the best thing that can be said about the film. A boring, meandering movie.
