A humane Dish
Dish Café has long been using local and sustainable ingredients for many of their meals and composting the waste with a local worm farmer. Now owners Joe and Nancy Horn announce they’ve switched many of their meats over to antibiotic-, hormone- and nitrate-free, humanely raised varieties. They’re also now buying their chicken from a free-range, antibiotic and hormone-free producer. Their eggs, pork and turkey deli meats have also been rated “Certified Humane” by the Humane Farm Animal Care group.
Joe said it was relatively difficult to source these products, though he found luck with Applegate Farms and Niman Ranch, who source their products only from farmers who use sustainable methods and who feed the animals vegetarian diets with no animal byproducts.
“We are really hoping to change the way people eat and source their food,” says Joe. “We are also using eco-friendly to-go products, recycling everything we can, using organic and local greens and use up all of our food scraps for compost.”
