James Franco delivers big time as Aron Ralston, a Utah hiker who got himself in a real jam back in 2003. A hiking mishap left his arm pinned by a boulder, eventually resulting in his amputating that arm with a utility knife. Franco and his director, Danny Boyle, actually find the joy and triumph in this story, quite the feat considering it contains scenes so gory they are allegedly causing people to pass out during screenings. While it is, indeed, a hard movie to watch at times, it is never gratuitous. It’s simply a film that goes to great lengths to show us what this man went through, and the incredibly hard decisions he had to make in order to survive. Unquestionably the best film Boyle has made yet, and Franco should find himself in the Oscar mix.
