“Chair-i-ty” begins at Artown
Artists and Their Chairs:
The Friends of the University of Nevada, Reno Library will host an auction of historic university lecture hall chairs, retired from campus use and adopted by artists, community leaders, and celebrities throughout the area to paint, design, or decorate.
Over 80 chairs have been turned into art objects ranging from elegant to outrageous, classic to avant-garde. The chairs are currently on display at venues throughout Reno and northern Nevada including coffee houses, art galleries, and businesses. Several chairs are on display at the former VSA gallery on Sierra Street next to the Silver Peak Brewery. Art Source on South Virginia Street is also playing host to several chairs within their newly opened 8,000 square foot gallery space.
Chair-i-ty will involve both silent and live auctions. The live auction, conducted by Auctioneer Mark Eastman, is scheduled to start at 6pm. Food and wine will be available for purchase. Jazz will be provided by Hans Halt and his quartet of the University of Nevada, Reno School of the Arts. Proceeds will go the new Mathewson-IGT building project at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Admission for the Chair-i-ty Auction is free. The event is slated for 4-7pm on Sunday, July 10, at McKinley Park School. For details, call Michele Basta at 775-784-6500 ext. 265, Carol Johnson at 775-853-1457 or Annie Hall at 775-826-1871.
