Sting leads to Oroville man being sentenced for trying to have sex with a minor

A man from Oroville recently was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison by a U.S. district judge for attempting to travel cross-country to meet a boy for sex.

For more than two years, Jan Alan Shafer, 65, traded sexually explicit emails and instant messages with an adult posing as a 10-year-old boy from Alabama, according to a press release from the U.S Department of Justice. The exchanges included images of child pornography. After expressing interest in having sex with the boy, Shafer was arrested in October 2014 in Oroville while attempting to board a Greyhound bus to Alabama.

On March 1, Shafer pleaded guilty to attempted travel with intent to engage in sex with a minor.
