From the outside, Eighth and Main Antique Center looks like it’s seen better days: boarded up windows and thick soot stains on the walls. Although the June 26 fire caused heat damage to the entire shop and destroyed at least 12 dealers’ booths, the staff at Eighth and Main are determined to rise from the ashes and prosper again. While they clean up and restore their space, the store has temporarily moved to the back building, where they offer the most exquisite collection of antiques, furnishings, fine art and vintage clothing.

Steve O’Bryan and his wife have owned Pullins Cyclery for 25 years, but the business itself has been opened for approximately 90. O’Bryan worked at the bike shop in high school under the original owner, Pullin, until he retired. Well known for their repairs, O’Bryan estimated that the shop made about 1,000 repairs between the months of May and July of this year alone. He recalls coming home after work during that period with broken nails and filthy fingers. His children would tease him about it, but he would turn to them and say “dude, that’s money.”

Chico is a great thrift store town, and the favorite (for several years running now) is the south-Chico behemoth known simply as The Arc. In an ongoing circle of recycling, people and businesses of Chico drop off their used clothing, kitchen wares, books, records, electronic equipment and furniture, only to return and pick up more bargains to replace their donated goods. Of course, Arc is a lot more than your typical thrift store; the money from your purchases goes to the Arc of Butte County, the local program that serves the disabled in our community.

Janet Lombardi Blixt started the Chico Plein Air Painters, a group of artists who paint together in their favorite studio—the outdoors. Blixt began painting at 7 years old, and earned her bachelor’s in art at Chico State. Her paintings are “impressionist yet representational” in her words, and spilling over with the California light she seems to trap onto the canvas. Farmers’ markets have become so popular and successful that they’ve proliferated in recent years. At least four are held in Chico each week during the summer months—not only the original (year-round) Saturday market at Second and Wall streets, but also at North Valley Plaza on Wednesdays, Enloe Medical Center on Tuesdays, and in Chapmantown on Fridays.
