Antiques store

1ST PLACE:
Eighth & Main Antique Center
745 Main St.; 893-5534

From the outside, Eighth and Main Antique Center looks like it’s seen better days: boarded up windows and thick soot stains on the walls. Although the June 26 fire caused heat damage to the entire shop and destroyed at least 12 dealers’ booths, the staff at Eighth and Main are determined to rise from the ashes and prosper again. While they clean up and restore their space, the store has temporarily moved to the back building, where they offer the most exquisite collection of antiques, furnishings, fine art and vintage clothing.

Guido’s Auto Precision

It ain’t easy finding a good, reliable mechanic. After all, when you’ve plopped down 20 grand (or more) on a car, you have to expect the best, right? So when it comes to specialty import car service, Guido’s Auto Precision is where Chicoans park their BMWs, Saabs and Volvos when they need a tune-up. Guido, who was trained at Ferrari and Lamborghini factories in his home country of Italy, has run his Chico shop since 1982. With such longevity and experience under his belt, no wonder his shop is a Chico favorite.

Cory’s Country Inn

1ST PLACE:
Cory’s Country Inn
4673 Nord Highway; 345-2955

It should come as no surprise that Cory’s Country Inn gets the award for best B&B in Chico. In a class of its own, Cory’s Country Inn—run by chef and art aficionado Cory Davis—offers a comfortable, peaceful, rural stay in one of three lovely “art-gallery” rooms. A sumptuous, made-to-order breakfast, prepared and served by Cory, awaits in the cozy dining room, painted with a garden mural (by Salvatore Casa) that echoes the beauty of the “secret garden” outside.

Bike shop

1ST PLACE:
Pullins Cyclery
801 Main St.; 342-1055

Steve O’Bryan and his wife have owned Pullins Cyclery for 25 years, but the business itself has been opened for approximately 90. O’Bryan worked at the bike shop in high school under the original owner, Pullin, until he retired. Well known for their repairs, O’Bryan estimated that the shop made about 1,000 repairs between the months of May and July of this year alone. He recalls coming home after work during that period with broken nails and filthy fingers. His children would tease him about it, but he would turn to them and say “dude, that’s money.”

Barnes & Noble may not be a local book store, but it certainly is the biggest in Chico. With aisles and aisles of books ranging from fiction to self-help to travel and reference, B&N knows what it’s doing. Having a Starbucks inside just adds to the ambiance—it’s not uncommon to see a handful of people sipping their lattes, thumbing through the latest Dan Brown novel. Occassionally, too, the store will hold fundraisers for local nonprofits as well as book signings.

Trader Joe’s isn’t your average supermarket. Perhaps that’s why Chicoans love it so much. From its sustainable practices (bringing your own reusable shopping bag will earn you a raffle ticket) to its wide selection of worldly goods, what’s not to like? It gives shoppers the ability to be adventurous and pick up some foreign foods you wouldn’t even know existed except they’re in the frozen-foods section at TJ’s. Owner Sally Long MacMillan has also stocked her shop with a huge selection of sheet music and band instruments for school, plus a nice selection of CDs featuring music by local bands. There are a couple of breakfast spots in town that Chicoans are eager to share with out-of-town guests, and Sin of Cortez has for many years been one of them. Lunch

1ST PLACE:
Broadway Heights California Cuisine
300 Broadway; 899-8075

There are so many reasons to go to Broadway Heights for lunch (or dinner) and one of the main reasons is location. Found upstairs in the historic Phoenix building in downtown Chico, the restaurant is a short walk from the university and City Plaza. Inside, diners will find a hip atmosphere with many window seats. Other fun spots are the tables for two next to the balcony, giving a bird’s-eye view to the goings-on downstairs. While the ambiance is a big selling point, the menu, which comprises savory California cuisine, is by far the best feature. A wide variety of sandwiches on freshly made focaccia bread, specialty pizza and calzones, and crisp salads, such as the mouth-watering Prosciutto Caesar, are among some of the popular offerings.

Sushi

1ST PLACE:
The Rawbar
346 Broadway; 897-0626

In the past three or four years, sushi has become the biggest, baddest thing in Chico. With sushi bars popping up all over the place, though, locals stay true to this hip downtown Japanese joint. The restaurant adheres to the highest standards when it comes to the quality of its fish, and its creative specials and artistic presentation only add to the appeal. In addition to a long list of sashimi, rolls and nigiri, the menu includes more traditional entrées. And every so often there are sushi classes, too, so you can learn from the masters. Who can beat that?

At lunch, take advantage of Priya’s abundant and varied buffet, which will run you just less than $10. In addition to having a great restaurant, being leaders in advancing sustainable practices and producing some of the best beers in the world, the Big Room at Sierra Nevada hosts frequently sold-out performances by some of the best touring musicians going. From Australian guitar wiz Tommy Emmanuel, to roots-rocker Jackie Greene, to hell raisers Southern Culture on the Skids, if it grooves, bops, wails or stomps, the Big Room’s stage and dance floor will be open. So, maybe we should get that next Planning Commission meeting set up in the pub followed by a couple hours on the dance floor with the Subdudes? It just feels right.
