Issue: November 29, 2012
"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds," wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson a couple of centuries back. Wonder what he'd make of Sacramento Bee columnist Dan Walters, who's spent four decades railing about what a failure Jerry Brown is? Media strategist Bill Bradley--who's been inside nearly as many political campaigns as Walters has covered--writes about the long-standing bad blood between California's twice-in-a-lifetime governor and the Sacramento political writer who thinks he can do no right.
In Frontlines, Dave Kempa reports on the Seventh and H Street Housing Community, a sustainable housing development for recently homeless and low-income Sacramento residents. It's a brilliant way to meet a pressing need--and it's the last low-income housing project in the pipeline. Kempa explains why. Also in Frontlines, Erika Perez reports on why Folsom Lake College opted out of the name-it-for-big-bucks bandwagon when it came to their new performing arts center. And in Capitol Lowdown, Greg Lucas says the fiscal outlook for California isn't quite as rosy as the passage of Prop. 8 and the recent forecasts might lead you to believe.
In this week's Arts&Culture feature, Christopher Arns takes a close look at Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson's plan to make our town the country's "Farm-to-Fork Capitol." Mmmm, mmmm good. Also in arts: Saunthy Nicolson-Singh on Blame Sally in Music; Kel Munger interviews costume designer Jessica Minnihan in Stage; and Jonathan Mendick takes a look a the gluttonous food challenges Sacramento offers in Dish.
Eat, drink, be merry--and save money. It's easy with SN&R Sweetdeals! Check it out at https://snrsweetdeals.newsreview.com/.
