The War to End All Wars, 1914-1918

On the park’s east side
I stop to read the names:
Sanger, H.; Kruger, W.; Gutierez, C.;
Brackman, G.; Brown, L., Stein, I.—
lists guarded by a frowning eagle
all cast in dusty bronze.
Ninety years have passed now
since Sacramento waved goodbye.
Oh, irony …
to think they died with promises
their war would be the last.
