Steven Spielberg wrote the screenplay and directs this realization of a film idea the late Stanley Kubrick had been working on for years. Haley Joel Osment is incredible as David, an android boy programmed to love and yearning to become a real boy. A dark, dark fairy tale that is as disturbing as anything Spielberg has ever done, the movie gets you thinking about themes such as cloning and what constitutes humanity. While this is a Spielberg film, there are definite Kubrick themes and visual styles being explored. Much is being said about the film’s so-called happy ending; in my eyes, there is nothing at all happy or cheery about the way this film concludes. One of the best-looking and complicated films you will ever see.
