Grown Ups

Rated 2.0

Five grown-up buddies from junior-high school (Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider) reunite 30 years later for the funeral of their beloved basketball coach and a nostalgic replay of that championship season. In Sandler and Fred Wolf’s script, the funeral is just an excuse for a short flurry of lame funeral gags, while the reunion, and subsequent weekend at a cabin in the woods, serves as pretext for a standard mixed-bag-of-characters-on-vacation movie (Daddy Day Camp, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, etc.). Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello and Joyce Van Patten also get involved in the melee. There are a few good laughs—in a monkeys-and-typewriters sort of way—before the obligatory family-values group hug. Dennis Dugan’s loutish direction is well-suited to the material.
