Wake up!

At last year’s Malibu Open in Sacramento, both the men’s and women’s water-ski jump world records were shattered in less than an hour. Who knows what these athletes will do for an encore? The 2003 Malibu Open is a weekend of water skiing that includes slalom, jumping, wakeboarding and every sort of water acrobatics short of riding on a killer whale. Some of the top names in water sports, including Jaret Llewellyn, Cory Pickos and Elena Milakova, will be striving to set more records this time out. Expect lots of food, live music, beer, sports vendors and plenty of people in bathing suits. It’s the closest you can get to a Southern California beach day without crossing the Grapevine.

See the world’s best water skiers at Bell Acqua Lakes at 5845 Dry Creek Road in Rio Linda. The three-day event kicks off at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday. The sports exhibitions wind up by 4 p.m. each day to leave plenty of time for after-parties. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.
