Some bands are kinda like the Violent Femmes—encyclopedically smart instrumental tracks backing vocals that weave all over melody road like a Volvo-load of art students. Such is St. Simon 3 (pictured), which plays at the True Love Coffeehouse, 2406 J Street, at 9 p.m. Saturday, September 27, with Slow Poisoners, a like-minded act from San Francisco with a keen graphic sense. The cover’s $6. Bands completely unlike the Femmes include our very own Dungeons and Drag Queens, which will be over at Old Ironsides, 1901 10th Street, with Low Flying Owls and Strike Him Centurion. It’s a 9 p.m. show for $7. And if you’re more into a proscenium-framed experience, Hot Hot Heat plays the Crest Theatre, 1013 K Street, with the French Kicks and the Joggers. Showtime’s 8 p.m.; admission’s $15.
