The End of America: Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot

Democracy in the United States is under siege. Using the cover of the terror threat, Bush & Co. have enacted edicts that pave the way for the loss of civilian control of the military, an end to checks and balances that protect us from abuses of power, and the abolition of legal safeguards like habeas corpus. In her rigorously argued tocsin, Naomi Wolf makes the case for the paranoia so many of us harbor: that a usurpation of our Constitution has been in the works for a long time now, that our freedoms are imperiled, and that we can no longer afford to merely grouse about it. What the Nazis did to secure power in Germany in the ’30s is not so different from fear tactics that have secured powers for the White House in the first decade of this century.
