Superbad

Rated 2.0

Two sex-obsessed high-school boys (Jonah Hill, Michael Cera), hoping to get laid by grad night so they won’t have to go off to college as virgins, focus on getting fake IDs to buy alcohol for a weekend party. Writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg share first names with their two main characters, suggesting either a hint of autobiography or a lot of projection; either way it’s probably wishful thinking, concocting the sort of outrageous adventures they wish they’d had when they were kids. The film is raunchy, profane and irresponsible (in the American Pie vein), but there’s no denying it’s pretty funny, especially in the first half-hour—although you may hate yourself for laughing. Eventually, the laughs peter out (pun intended), and director Greg Mottola can’t keep the movie from wearing out its welcome.
