Something Borrowed

Rated 3.0

A young woman (Ginnifer Goodwin) suddenly beds the fiancé (Colin Egglesfield) of her best friend (Kate Hudson), admitting that she’s been in love with him since long before the bride-to-be swept him out of her reach. What to do now—go with friendship or true love? It may sound like just another masochistic chick flick (My Best Friend’s Wedding, Made of Honor), but the movie rises above its lack of promise with a funny and unpredictable script (by Jennie Snyder Urman, from Emily Giffin’s novel) and excellent performances all around. Kate Hudson may be top-billed, but it’s Ginnifer Goodwin’s movie (she’s been overdue for a breakout role since He’s Just Not That Into You), and Hudson has the grace to let her have it. Luke Greenfield directs smoothly, and John Krasinski adds spice as Goodwin’s best friend.
