Slather on the jam

Jam tastes great on many variations of toast. In a more musical context than your average countertop pop-up is capable of providing, however, to “jam” means to work without a net, to improvise, to noodle where no man has noodled before. Not that Uncle Harlens Band fell out of Uncle Jerry’s VW microbus; the Davis-Sacramento foursome—which includes guitarist Sean Lehe (who also comps quite marvelously in the Tony Passarell 4tet, a jazz group), keyboardist Jeff Coleman, bassist Mike Kelly and drummer Tom Monson—may go on the occasional phishing expedition, but it also can explore non-patchouli-soaked genres, too. Along with acclaimed bindlestiff-folk-rock band the Freight Train Riders of America, UHB will play 8 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the 24th Street Theater, 2791 24th St., a venue where music can be enjoyed by patrons of all ages. (Dunno who “Uncle Harlen” is, but they tell us the music comes regular or extra crispy.)
