Save Me

Rated 4.0

Save Me is one of those small, gay-themed films that never played a theater anywhere near Sacramento. More’s the pity, because this examination of a troubled young gay man’s struggle to move beyond self-destructive behavior makes clear that the roots of his self-loathing lie in prejudice. What’s more, he finds his solution in Christianity. The gay people aren’t perfect and the straight people aren’t fascists; the fact that they’re all Christians is handled with respect and affection. Featuring out actor Chad Allen and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit regular Judith Light, the movie does have a bit of a Lifetime Network feel to it, with lots and lots of emotion, angst and tears. Still, Save Me avoids easy answers in favor of the difficult path of love.
