Legendary punk bassist Mike Watt returns to his roots with his third rock opera Hyphenated-Man. Inspired by the surreal paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, it surveys 30 different types of men and their behavior in Watt’s inimitable elliptical poetry. It’s a tour de force from “Own-Horn-Blowing-Man” to “Blowing-It-Out-Both-Ends-Man.” The album returns to jazzy punk-funk songs of his first band Minutemen, none extending much beyond two minutes. What’s more, Watt’s trio has been playing Minutemen songs at the end, revisiting that seminal music with a guitarist for the first time since D. Boon’s death ended the band in ’85. 1400 Alhambra Boulevard, www.myspace.com/wattfrompedro.
