Tomatoes

It’s not for nothing that we’re sometimes nicknamed Sacratomato. Once home to many tomato processing facilities, Sacramento is a tomato-lover’s paradise. They grow readily in backyards, school gardens and vacant lots, and farmers bring a plethora of varieties to market. Cherry tomatoes as sweet as candy arrive first, followed by poetically named heirlooms like black krim, green zebra and mortgage lifter. Skip the pale and flaccid supermarket imports. Eat them on toast, use them to garnish salads and juice the rest for cocktails.
