Priest

Rated 2.0

In a post-apocalyptic future, a warrior priest (Paul Bettany) defies the Church to hunt down the vampires who killed his brother and sister-in-law and kidnapped his niece. Director Scott Stewart and writer Cory Goodman may be inexperienced (Stewart has directed only one feature; Goodman hasn’t written any), but they know better than to try to do anything with the Korean comic-book series they’re supposedly adapting, with its incomprehensible plotline and hilariously dopey character names. Instead, they opt for a more-or-less straightforward rip-off of John Ford’s The Searchers (1956), with Bettany in the John Wayne role and Cam Gigandet replacing Jeffrey Hunter as the youthful sidekick. Playing Spot the Reference to Ford’s classic (and other movies) adds some fun to what might otherwise be pretty dismal.
