Make it a double

It’s the perfect time of year for ice cream (but then again, when isn’t it a good time for ice cream?). I talked to Craig Rutledge, manager of Vic’s Ice Cream (3199 Riverside Boulevard), whose dad helped open the shop in Land Park in 1947.

“We make more vanilla ice cream than anything else, since we use it in pies and shakes, but the most popular flavor that we sell is mint chip.

“Our signature flavor is called Jik Jak, which is a light chocolate with cinnamon, malt, almonds and fudge marbling. No one else makes that.

“During the summer, because it’s hotter, we start making more fruit flavors. Fresh boysenberry sherbet and banana ice cream are only available then. They’re lighter products and more refreshing.”
