Legal, but unobtainable

I would love to purchase some marijuana from one of these fine dispensaries in California. I don’t have a letter of recommendation. What should I do?

—Mo Money

Unfortunately, you are SOL for at least another 10 months. The rules and regulations about commercial cannabis sales aren’t due until the end of this year. That doesn’t mean that cities aren’t being proactive.

San Diego just passed legislation to allow for the medical dispensaries it already has to become recreational dispensaries when the new regulations take effect. Sacramento just published a report calling for more than 50 new city-worker jobs to handle the new regulations, although I am not sure why the Sacramento report calls for 16 new police officers.

That aside, it is great to see cities and counties embracing cannabis. I remember when San Diego tried to shut down every dispensary it could find. This is progress. As to your particular problem: California state law allows adults to give weed to other adults. Find a fellow adult, and ask them for some cannabis. I am sure they will be willing to help you out.

Where can I learn about the new regulations for legal weed?

—Ahn Trepanoor

There are a few events happening in the next few days and weeks that can help you learn about the new rules and regulations. On Friday, February 10 (I know this is short notice, but I just found out about it), www.420abundance.com is presenting a workshop and networking event at the Canaccelarate headquarters at 1860 Howe Avenue. On February 18, the International Cannabis Business Conference (www.internationalcbc.com) returns to San Francisco.

Lori Ajax, head of the California Bureau of Cannabis Regulation, will be giving a speech and will be available for questions and answers. Tickets to these events are expensive—I do wish these event producers could offer some low-cost and no-cost scholarships and waivers to worthy, underfunded startups—but the information you will receive from the seminars should be well worth the expense.

Go to http://bmcr.ca.gov to see what the bureau is working on.

What sort of weed do you suggest for rainy days?

—Burst McCloud

If I am planning to clean my house, I like a good, buzzy sativa. Trainwreck is a classic choice, although a nice Sour Diesel or an Afghani cross is also delicious. If I am just gonna cuddle up on the couch and binge-watch A Series of Unfortunate Events (Neil Patrick Harris is a comedic genius!), then I like an indica dominant, like Blueberry or Granddaddy Purple. Have fun.

P.S. Making edibles on a rainy day is a good way to keep the house warm and smelling like cookies.
