John Tchicai brings his free-thinking saxophone to headline this Saturday’s Jazz Summit at the Palms.

If you’re a free-jazz fan, Saturday night is definitely worth a drive to Winters to see Jazz Summit with John Tchicai & Friends. For one, Tchicai, the saxophonist and former Davis resident who played on John Coltrane’s 1965 album Ascension, returns from Denmark, where he has lived these past three years. Throughout the years, Tchicai has continued to compose and play in a variety of contexts; here, he will appear in a trio with guitarist Mark Oi and drummer Mat Marucci. Also on the bill will be the Nebula Quartet, which features saxophonist Tony Passarell, who organized this show, along with saxophonist Scott Anderson, bassist Gerry Pineda and drummer Zack Hash. Opening will be the Ross Hammond Unit, featuring guitarist Hammond with bassist and tuba player Erik Kleven, drummer Thomas Monson and percussionist Alex Jenkins. The venue is the Palms, at 13 Main Street in downtown Winters; the time is 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 21; and your $10 will be, well, very well spent.
