Gourmet bank

Stocked options: Sacramento’s downtown architecture is mostly characterized by drab cement projects from the middle of last century. So any rare, old-timey holdovers should be cherished, particularly the D.O. Mills Bank Building (629 J Street). Of late, it has been underutilized, mostly hosting proms and weddings in its splendid gold and marble interior. But by early September, it should be converted into a culinary cornerstone of downtown, known simply as The Bank.

“It will be the most gourmet local food court you can imagine,” said project spokesperson Patrick Harbison.

More vendors will be announced soon, but the first is Kim Scott from Mama Kim Eats (1616 Del Paso Boulevard), which dishes out American-Southern classics like fried chicken and waffles ($17) and novel options like lamb sliders with goat gouda ($10). She thinks both will make The Bank menu, along with a fresh seafood-and-oyster bar.

The development team, including businessman James W. Cameron Jr., toured Spanish, Turkish and American open-air markets for inspiration as they crafted plans for a project with “one foot in Sacramento’s past and one foot in its future.”

Using the building’s original, ornate interior, The Bank will host a multitude of local vendors, serving diverse cuisines alongside craft beers and cocktails. Prepared by both new and established restaurateurs, dishes will range from “big, fill-me-up meals” to “something light before the game,” said Harbison. Visitors can eat at the rooftop bar, which offers panoramic views, or in a little-before-seen vault that’s been converted into a taproom.

Knocked out: After sparking a digital uproar by sharing his controversial political opinions, Daniel Murphy resigned as brewer of Twelve Rounds Brewing Co. (866 57th Street) on April 11, ceding control to David Chavez, who will manage the business along with Christopher Harrison.

In a signed Facebook post, Murphy wrote, “My whole life was the brewery. Politics have polarized people here in Sacramento and across the nation. I am a very passionate person and let them consume me. I really don’t hate people. I ask that you all please give Twelve Rounds another chance.”
